Westcoast is replacing a crossing of the Coquihalla River by means of isolated open cut, located NW of Hope BC. Previous direct pipe installation (OM2016-032) was unsuccessful. This activity is a joint field inspection of Integrity Management and Environmental Protection.

Wildlife- no western toads found on site- end caps noted on all sections and segments of pipe- designated Northen Spotted Owl habitat flagged- company minimized cutting of temporary workspace so instead of flagging large diameter trees along the perimeter, additional trees were left standing.- a pile of coarse wood debris (>50cm diameter breast height and greater than 5 m length) was noted in temporary workspace. These trees were stockpiled for use during reclamation of the site.Vegetation- EI stated that root wad salvage had not been successful- rooted stock had been sourced from a nursery near Vancouver and would be planted during site reclamation- all equipment checked on site had a "Weed Free" sticker and date of inspectionSediment and Erosion Control- bridge deck outfitted along edge with vertical boards approximately 12 inches in height- grey water management hose end layed out approximately 100 m from river in a vegetated area. Dispersion tube attached to the end of the hose with geotextile matting below to dissipate energy of the water and collect sediment. No erosion noted.- Turbidity monitoring stations in place with instream data loggers. Current turbidity levels at 0 NTU. - clean water bypass pumps and backup pumps in place to assist in isolation of main channelFish and Fish Habitat- Triton Environmental Consultants hired to do fish salvage. Planning for three crews to salvage for a 12 h period.- side channel has been lowered to act as a diversion channel to maintain flow and migration during the isolation of the main channel.
